Introduction‘Tomorrow, the BBC reports, we’re expecting unseasonably low temperatures. I hear a murmur of disbelief: "Is this what they mean by global warming?"
This represents Myth 1.
"Sea level rise? How can melting ice lead to such a significant increase in water levels? Even if I drop something in a bath, it doesn’t overflow dramatically. We’re talking about the entire ocean—how can this possibly make sense?"
This is Myth 2.
"We’ve always experienced natural disasters. The climate has always fluctuated. Remember the glacial periods? This is just a repeat of history."
This is Myth 3.
There are numerous misconceptions about climate change. If we could effectively dispel and clarify these myths for the general public, we’d be on a faster track to achieving net zero emissions.
In this book, I will aim to debunk some common misconceptions about climate change, provide an explanation of the reasons behind the ongoing debate, and explore climate engineering strategies that could potentially mitigate the effects. My aim is to be an effective science communicator who makes complex scientific ideas accessible and engaging, helping organisations make informed decisions.
The scienceI know what you’re thinking. Science has been wrong in the past. It could be wrong again. That’s totally true. Science has indeed been wrong before. However, as we have advanced as a civilisation and improved our methods, so too has our scientific work. Now, we have access to rigorous data collection, predictive modelling and extensive peer review, all of which are subject to continuous refinement.
So what even is global warming? Or climate change? And is there a difference?

What We Can Learn from the Japanese

Bullet trains. Robot cafés. Morphing chairs. Japan is a beacon of the future – a vision, in ways both innovative and traditional, that there’s much we can learn from its approach. In Japan:Inclusivity and dignity are core valuesThe country’s commitment to inclusivity is evident. Tokyo, a megacity is one of the few cities globally that prioritises accessibility - where public walkways feature braille signage to aid those with visual impairments, helping people navigate independently.Robot cafes provide unique opportunities for individuals who may otherwise face employment challenges, integrating them into the community and offering them a sense of fulfilment through being able to serve others.People work hard and party harderLong hours are the norm, and it’s customary for workers to socialize with their bosses in vibrant bars after work. Not participating in these gatherings might even be perceived as rude.Where respect is given, not earnedThe Japanese go out of their way to avoid inconveniencing others, through speaking softly in public or opting for subtle fragrances. The respect for other people is palpable through their cultural greetings. The practise of bowing made me feel special, royal even. Eventually it became second nature as it was ingrained in my daily interactions, a testament to the deep-rooted respect amongst people.
From considerate public behaviour to opting for conservative clothing choices, respect and subtlety define daily interactions. Yet, Japan also embraces bold expressions of individuality through vibrant fashion scenes like Harajuku and maid cafés.
Minimal effort for maximum gain, beauty everywhereOne would expect Tokyo, a megacity and bustling metropolis to be packed with litter and dirt, yet it can be seen through walking around that the people respect their surrounding environment as much as they respect one another. Despite the sparse presence of trash cans, there is a clear communal effort to maintain cleanliness as litter was scarce.
TeamLab, an immersive art exhibition, beautifully blends technology with art, through multi-sensory experiences that blur the boundaries between the viewer and the artwork, leaving you feeling at one with the natural world.
Meditation is just as important as eating and drinkingMy unforgettable Buddhist temple stay introduced me to mindfulness. The morning began with morning mantras and the resonant chime of bells, followed by gratitude for a simple vegetarian meal. This practice of slowing down and embracing simplicity, including sleeping on a futon and enjoying public hot springs, grounded me in the present moment. The serenity of this experience transcended religious boundaries, offering a universal lesson in mindfulness.Freshness is favoured over complexity in cuisineThis is something I learned quickly. The Japanese place a premium on the freshness of food rather than the complexity of a meal. Fresh, raw fish is considered a delicacy, embodying the pinnacle of luxury. To them, it won’t get much better than this. The cuisine was exquisite, from ramen to okonomiyaki to sushi, there was a multitude of restaurants to choose from around every corner. Even convenience stores like 7/11 had it all. Vending machines were at every turn – one could never get thirsty here. All in all, Japan has an authentic culture, one that is both unique and deeply inspiring. While it’s challenging to replicate such a distinctive way of life, there are numerous valuable lessons we can draw from Japan’s forward-thinking approach. Japan’s model of innovative, respectful and beautiful living is something we can all learn from and aspire to.
